Course Overview - IOM

The iDirect Installation, Operation, and Maintenance course is intended for those personnel who are responsible for the operation, and management of iDirect satellite communications products and networks. The course provides the student with the skills necessary to operate and manage a typical iDirect satellite network, as well as install iDirect remote equipment.

Through clearly presented lectures, demonstrations, and practical exercises the student will attain a comprehensive overview of Network Operations from the iDirect perspective.

To properly and quickly determine network problems, the student will study the satellite and data communications related components of the network, while attaining an understanding of general data communications protocols and procedures that are associated with the data flow through their iDirect network.

Expanding on the basic theory, the course will provide an in depth understanding of the iDirect hardware and software platform. The student will complete a number of hands on exercises using the iDirect platform to reinforce the structured course material.

Course Outline:

  • Introduction to iDirect
  • Satellite Communications Fundamentals
  • Data Communications Concepts
  • Introduction to Hub Preparation and Installation of iDirect software and hardware
  • Network Management System - Operator Training

Course Overview- IOM Level II

The IOM Level II course provides the student with an intermediate level IOM skill set necessary for implementing many higher level feature sets now available. These skills add to those obtained through attendance of the IOM Level I course which covers more generic, standard features and options contained in any typical iDirect satellite network.

Presented in a clear and technical manner, the entire course provides a combination of lecture, demonstrations, and practical exercises that will give the student a more comprehensive and slightly advanced level overview of Network Operations from the basic iDirect perspective.

This course will provide a greater understanding of the iDirect hardware & software platforms at the next level and explain many, more advanced features available to the typical iDirect network. Each student will complete a number of hands on exercises using a fully functional iDirect satellite network & system components to reinforce much of the IOM Level II course material.

Material is divided into 2 primary coverage areas, Core Competency Modules (CCM) and Optional Features Coverage Modules (OFM). Once all CCMs have been covered and all required tasks have been completed, students can select from the list of OFMs to be presented during the scheduled class time remaining. Pre-selection of OFMs may also be made possible during the registration confirmation process or by specific request at the time of class login. OFM material covered typically completes the final two days of instruction for the week. OFM materials still count toward completion of all IOM Level II requirements for course certification.

This outline includes the following IOM Level II standard features as listed and introduced with iDS v8.0 (or prior) software release:

  • Distributed Network Management System (NMS) architecture & configuration (4hrs)
  • NMS Upgrade Assistant, or Revision Server process & procedures (2 hrs)
  • Mesh Phase I (2 hrs)
  • Global NMS basic concepts (licensed feature) (2 hrs)
    • Roaming Remotes
    • Managing multiple independent, or inter-related networks
  • IP Compression (TCP & UDP) (1 hrs)
  • Group QoS, or Quality of Service (4 hrs)
  • Updates on hardware capabilities, variation support (1 hr)
  • Latest version NMS enhancements and improvements (misc. short subjects – 2 hrs)
  • Course Review, Final Written & Practical Exam & Review (4 hrs)
  • Critique & Certificate Presentation

This outline includes optional, class selectable modules which are available ala carte on certain iDirect products & features. Topics will cover all previous, as well as current software release versions for the specific feature as listed below:

  • iSCPC product support, processes & procedures (4 hrs)
  • Global NMS advanced concepts (licensed feature) (4-8 hrs)
    • Automatic Beam Selection (ABS) processes & techniques (8 hrs)
    • Communications-On-The-Move (COTM) processes & techniques (availability TBD)
  • Transmission Security or TRANSEC (licensed feature) (4 hrs)
  • Spread Spectrum mode of operation (4 hrs-tbd)
  • Virtual Local Area Networks (VLANs) implementation procedures & techniques (2 hrs)
  • iNFINITI remote-to-network locking security feature (1 hrs)
  • NMS Geographic Mapping (third party license required) (1 hrs)
  • Remote sleep mode (1 hrs)

 Course Overview - Advanced IOM

Over time we have received many requests from our customers indicating they would like get in depth knowledge about the iDirect equipment which was not presented in the IOM course. The course is based on information, knowledge base, professional tips which were collected from our engineering group, TAC, and suggestions from students who have attended the Advance IOM course previously.

The iDirect Advance IOM course is intended for personnel who are responsible for assisting with second level escalations for the iDirect satellite products and networks.  The IOM course is a prerequisite to attend the Advance IOM training.

The course covers Advance RF and Data communication concepts and their relevance to the iDirect system.  It also covers various case studies that would enable the students to have a deeper understanding of the iDirect system.

The course includes not only theoretical material but also practical exercises. Most chapters involve a demonstration of useful commands or exercises that are embedded into the chapter. In addition there are hands-on exercises which require all students to participate by logging in various components of the system and practice advance troubleshooting methods.

Course Outline:

  • Advanced RF Concepts
  • Advanced Data Communication Concepts
  • Key Network Components
  • QOS
  • TCP-UDP-IP
  • System Control
  • Inside look to the NMS
  • Network Planning Tool (optional)

Handouts are provided to supplement existing course material and to provide additional up-to-date details on currently released software and hardware components.

Course Overview - Group QoS Course

Group QoS Course The Group QoS course provides the students with an in-depth understanding about how the iDirect Group QoS feature works. This feature is introduced in software version iDS 8.0 released by iDirect in August 2007. This course explains how the Group QoS feature works and shows the student how to configure, manage, and troubleshoot this feature. The course is presented in a clear and technical manner, providing a combination of lecture, demonstrations, and practical exercises that will give the student a comprehensive overview of the Group QoS feature. This course is 2 days in length, and covers the following subjects:

1.     Introduction to Group QoS Concept and Terminology

2.     Group QoS architecture

3.     Configuring GQoS in iBuilder (with an example)

4.     Group QoS Monitoring

Course Overview - Network Design

The iDirect Network Design Class is intended for systems engineers, presales engineers, proposal engineers and network consultants within iDirect Hub Operators.

The Network Design Class covers in-depth iDirect iNFINITI Broadband VSAT product capabilities and complex network design issues. It will help the participants to make the iDirect Broadband VSAT business case and translate it into a competitive telecommunications service offering.

Participants will examine customer service requirements through multiple real world case studies and convert them into the optimum network designs with lowest cost of ownership.

Each case study is accompanied with hands-on exercises using the iDirect Network Planning Tool iNPT. Customer traffic characteristics and the satellite link budget are translated into the best suited network topology to determine hardware and space segment requirements.

Participants analyze customer application characteristics, IP traffic and bandwidth assumptions, IP QoS and service level objectives and map them to the appropriate advanced iNFINITI product capabilities.
